The Werkhof area, built in 1973, houses the central infrastructure buildings for the operation of Zurich Airport, including the fire watch and rescue services. The project objective was the cost-effective renovation and modernization of the buildings during ongoing, and partly 24-hour operation. The winning project of the competition convinced the jury by its efficient construction logistics. In a new building, fire watch and rescue services are combined under one roof. The old building, which is in an unfortunate location with regard to a planned taxiway, can thus be used as a rochade area during the construction period and eventually be dismantled. The new fire station is primarily a highly efficient functional building – when the alarm is triggered, the emergency services have a maximum of 90 seconds to set off fully equipped. But efficiency also requires rest. Both are combined in the upper recreation and rest rooms. The assembly point for the alarm becomes a meander facility and thus domestic corridor during the day.
