The new facility for the Laufen Secondary School meets the teaching demands of contemporary school operation, and offers space for alteration requirements and for different forms of teaching. The required spatial program fulfills the skillfully set volumetric structure, which takes into account the conditions of a staged construction and a possible extension.
All is held under one roof: The new school complex offers infrastructure for 18 classes, group rooms, rooms for special teaching, as well as rooms for the the teaching staff and operations. The integrated double gymnasium, the multifunctional assembly hall and the media library provide the building with space for movement and activity, and all can be functionally linked. The ground floor and basement are open to the public and clubs outside school hours, and are accessed via separate entrances. In addition, outdoor areas are created for the breaks, sporting activity lessons and vehicle parking. The spatial and structural concept allows the school complex to be extended to the north in order to accommodate 27 additional classes.
The neighborhood will receive a newly formulated and generously structured open space in which the school complex is included. Within this park-like situation, the new replacement building appears as a solitary volume, and is in atmospheric ‘dialogue’ with the surrounding vegetation. The striking volume with its jagged roof communicates its interior qualities to outsiders. The new accent in the public area creates identity for the neighborhood.
