The project goal was to renew the entire facility, which involves the entire airport area, while at the same time increasing capacity by about one third. To achieve this, the central GSA building is to be expanded by 31,000 square meters and all be continuously networked. The 24-hour operation should never be interrupted – not only the GSA, but also the highly sensitive security uses in the neighboring buildings.
To cope with the technical and logistical complexity, the project was designed as a BIM project. The starting point was the finished planning of the original builders, around whom the project and model had to be rebuilt. Today, the technical complexity is hardly perceptible from the outside, but the building located at the access road is. Due to the limited funds for architecture – just under half of the budget goes to the plant construction – the planning office responsible, Steiger Concept, invested primarily in an incisive concept. Inexpensive corrugated sheet metal, covered with reflective adhesive foil, marks and scrutinizes the boundary between land and air, here and about.
