With the assembly of the final wooden element, the Freilager School celebrated its topping out ceremony on 30 April. Unfortunately, due to Corona, there was no celebration for the many people involved, although they would have deserved one. During the last 12 months, master builders, steel and timber constructors erected the basic structure of the school building in stages. So that the ground floor with the common rooms remained largely free, the ceiling slab spans over 30 m from the façade to the column axis in the center of the building. The large extent of the span is made possible by a steel supporting structure on the upper floor, from which the ceiling above the ground floor is suspended from tension supports. All is then roofed over by attractively designed wooden shed roofing. In addition to a spacious roof space with skylight for the classrooms, the wooden elements also form the bracing in the all-round statical system.

The high degree of prefabrication enabled short assembly times – four weeks for the shed roofing and just 2½ days for the steel truss girders. After final acceptance of the completed supporting structure by the structural engineer, the temporary reinforcing the ceilings on the ground floor and basement were able to be removed in May, and the supporting structure commissioned. The masonry work on the upper floor was then commenced and an intensive phase of finishing with building services and interior fittings from the basement to the upper floor was initiated. Everything finally went to plan, and Albisrieden obtained a new school building in the Summer of 2022 – and hopefully there can be a big celebration ceremony by then at the latest. Until then, however, we at Confirm are eager to say a big thank you to all those involved in the building construction work, the planners and the contractors. We look forward to continuing our successful and pleasant cooperation in the future!
